Our Workshops

We are Boston’s only youth photo class on-the-go capturing the city and her people while learning about her history and culture. Professional digital cameras are supplied. All of our teachers are photographers working in the field. Our week-long Summer workshops are 9-3pm for ages 11-15, and are good for all levels (unless otherwise noted).

Pick up/drop off is at Cutis Hall parking lot at 20 South Street in Jamaica Plain. There is no supervision before 9am and after 3pm. Photo lessons, editing and downtime take place 2 miles away at the HOME TEACHING SPACE which has a yard, deck and basketball. *Please note that a small, friendly dog lives in the house, but is kept separate from class.

We have photo field trips daily and get around in 8-passenger vehicles driven by teachers. Just some of the places we visit: East Boston North End, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, South End, Charlestown, Chinatown, Copley Square, Harvard Square, Downtown Crossing, Boston Common, Charles River, Greenway, Seaport District, Port Norfolk, Castle Island and away trips to Concord, Salem, Lynn, Nahant, Gloucester, Rockport and more.

Over the years we have made 13 short films with our movie-making classes and hope to add film back into the curriculum soon. You can see our movies on Youtube.

Big Picture offers Boston-based photo workshops over BPS school vacations, specifically 9 weeks of Summer. Lead teachers are always photographers and artists. We like keeping classes SMALL so we can buzz around the city and neighboring areas with ease in our 2 program vehicles. It also fosters closer friendships and allows teachers to give one-on-one attention.

Our one-of-a-kind program is a boutique experience. We are part camp and part art school. 2/3rds of the time we spend "on the go" shooting in Boston hot spots like the North End and hidden gems like the Lynch Family Skate Park. Once or twice a week, we venture out further away to places like Nantasket Beach to shoot at Fort Revere and take a dip in the ocean. The other 1/3rd of the time is spent at the teaching space having lessons, reviewing work, editing our photos and relaxing with downtime activities. Themes like Historic Greater Boston, Small Towns and Farms and Behind the Scenes give us the framework to learn more about Boston also explore new areas and businesses.

Every week the students and staff vote on a winning image that incorporates our lessons and theme best. At the end of the summer, we turn to the instagram community to vote on the winning image of summer and a $50 amazon gift card. Follow us on instagram to check it out!

MUST READ BEFORE REGISTERING TO CLASS.
COVID-19 precautions: More time will be spent outside on trips and at the teaching space. We have added a new large deck in 2021 for outdoor activities.
