What is Big Picture Art House?

We are a team and summers are about fun, friends and photo.

Big Picture Art House is on a path to create a community where people can connect in an artistic and familial environment. We aim to fill the gap in photo and film programming for middle school age children. We currently serve over 100 students each year with 3 photography teachers and 20 week-long classes. Teachers are professional photographers, DSLR cameras are supplied and workshops take place on-the-go around Boston and surrounding areas. Our home base for editing and lessons is in Dorchester.

We are all about local culture, small business and expression. Each year we add new programming and someday hope to have our own larger facility for events, classes and even more "connecting". Whether we are in Boston, Salem or an overnight class destination (RI, ME, NH, etc), we meet people, hear their stories and document life.

Currently, our emphasis is on photography classes, particularly our full summer program for 11 to 15 year-olds. Over the years we have made 13 short films with our movie-making classes and hope to add film back into the curriculum soon. You can see our movies on Youtube.

Big Picture welcomes all races, classes, genders, religions and political backgrounds. We require participants to enter this program with the same mindset.

For lunch we visit foodie destinations a few times each summer without sending student budgets through the roof. Students are also welcome to bring packed lunches. We offer regular options like sub shops, Shake Shack, or our favorite Sullivan’s at Castle Island. But also visit places like Bricco Panetteria in the North End, Boston Public Market stalls from local vendors, Georgetown Cupcakes, Dirty Water Dough, Roy's Cold Cuts, Jaho Cafe in Salem and more. We love to grab some penny candy and a Richie’s slush at the candy store in Nahant on a hot day or get a photo-worthy, designer shake at Munchies and Milkshakes in Nantasket. Your agenda will let you know what days you NEED to bring a lunch and also if we have a special food spot planned. It is always good to have some extra cash for fun snacks.

Traveling around in 8 passenger vans driven by teachers gives us much more freedom to get to and from ideal shooting/fun locations. We love hitting Fascination arcade in Nantasket after shooting at Fort Revere, going to the Lynch Family Skate Park, getting ice cream at Salem Willows when we head North, and passing through the historic library in Nahant on out way 40 Steps.
